Who We Are

 

We are a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status located in the Miami Gardens area.

 

Since 2000, Fresh Start of Miami-Dade, Inc. provides community Adult Mental Health services such as self-help, education, training, relaxation, recovery through the arts, recreation activities while promoting advocacy and empowerment in a peaceful, homelike, nurturing and supportive environment for those with mental health and co-occurring challenges. 

 

The agency reaches out to help its consumer-based membership and the community by building strong relationships, building strong advocacy and active consumer participation – the vehicle for combating isolation, hopelessness, and nurturing and building support networks.  The services provided enhance and maintain recovery, personal dignity and offer an environment that protects personal privacy while maintaining the personal integrity of its membership.  Self-determination for each member is the agency’s priority and it ensures that members retain the fullest possible control of their lives and as much as is possible, be able to set their own goals and participate in planning the activities surrounding their own lives.

    

 

 

 



Our Mission

 

To foster recovery and enhance the quality of life for persons diagnosed with mental, emotional, behavioral, and/or co-occurring wellness challenges, through empowerment, education, training, self-sufficiency, advocacy, socialization, and support.

1) continue to host monthly meetings, 2) continue Leadership Training opportunities and support the development of new consumer leaders throughout the State, 3) continue training on developing Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP), 4) promote initiatives for Recovery, and 5) support and promote attendance at other

About our Leader

Sandra is a leader in promoting mental health transformation initiatives representing consumers as a presenter in numerous meetings and trainings throughout the United States.  She has been honored with several awards including the 2006 Voice Award from SAMHSA, the 2007 Heroes in the Flight Award from the Mental Health Association, the 2007 Consumer Advocate of the year from the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court, Miami-Dade County, friendship Games Award 2013, and the Southest Florida 2014 EPIC Award.

 

Sandra McQueen-Baker has been facilitating meetings and trainings for over 10 years.  Her survival  and recovery story has been published in the 2007 book “Common Threads, Stories of Survival & Recovery form Mental Illness”.  Sandra is a Recovery Educator and one of the first Advanced WRAP Facilitators in Florida; She is also a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist from the Florida Board Certification Board.
